Many of our residents have found that Vestavia Hills is a wonderful place to call home, both when they were just getting started and now as they sail into their golden years. A variety of classes and lunch/activities programs are available through Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation – there are several well-established groups offering the opportunity for seniors to connect socially. For more information, contact program coordinator Sandi Wilson at 205.978.0163 or swilson@vhal.org.
The City offers weekday lunch and activity programs at New Merkel House in Cahaba Heights. Lunches are provided in partnership with the United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA). For more information, please call or email program coordinator Melanie Perry at 205.967.5977 or mperry@vhal.org.
For seniors in need of assistance with hot meals at home, the Meals On Wheels program is available through the UWAAA. For more information, call 205.592.0413.

MORE INFORMATION
The original New Merkel House opened in 1994 as a center for community gatherings and, in recent years, was used primarily as a senior center. Located adjacent to Cahaba Heights Park and Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights, the newly constructed New Merkel House offers space for activities and gatherings, as well as outdoor opportunities. The new building is one-story for easy navigation. Flat, expanded parking, wheelchair accessibility and a cozy fireplace area make this an incredible space to spend time in! For more information regarding New Merkel House, contact Melanie Perry at 205.967.5977.
